DIY with Sammy Bar: Quarantine Master Bedroom Reno

DIY with Sammy Bar: Quarantine Master Bedroom Reno

Our resident DIY gal Sammy has been keeping SOOOO busy during this time at home. Every week she sends us pics and videos of a new project. When she’s not working part-time at ISABELLA (come visit her on Saturdays in the shop), she’s busy designing + DIY’ing her own spaces. Check-out her Instagram stories + highlights to see her in action for yourself.

From doing an entire room in ship lap, building and planting a garden (go super girl workin’ those power tools!), to renovating her master, she’s learned a few DIY tricks along the way. We asked her to write our blog post this week to share her master renovation. Introducing you to our resident DIY-er (and the next Rehab Addict star) Sammy…

And her master reveal which turned out so fresh + chic …

Here’s the behind-the-scenes skinny from Sammy…

Navigating through these past few months has been a challenge for everyone, but I feel lucky to be working part-time from home. I’ve still found myself with lots of free time, so I decided to take advantage and tackle a few projects. I built two raised garden beds in my backyard and planted tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and lots of herbs. I built an 8-foot long patio table, with the hopes that once social distancing ends, I can have all my friends over for a big dinner party [ummm… yes please. We’re counting on that! πŸ™‚ ], but my biggest project of all was renovating the master bedroom, including installing wainscoting around the entire room.

DIY’ing has been entirely trial and error for me. I’ve learned new skills and techniques as I’ve tried them. YouTube has truly been my guiding light throughout this master reno project!

First, let’s see the BEFORE …

My boyfriend, Jamie, lived in our home for almost 2 years before I moved in (and changed pretty much everything!). So, I was working with a very dark grey and boring room. Do you see what I mean?

Our bedroom is in the back of our home, so it gets the least amount of natural sunlight compared to the other rooms. I knew I needed to lighten it up with paint, but I also wanted to add a textural element to give interest and character to the room. I had done shiplap in Jamie’s office so I thought something different in the master… wainscoting was the perfect fit!

THE PROCESS

I started by removing the existing baseboards and painting the top half of the bedroom a pure white. Then I cut my wood and began framing out the wainscoting on the walls. Next, I filled in the nail holes and seams, sanded everything, and painted the wainscoting a creamy off-white color. For the walls, I chose Sherwin Williams Pure White and for the wainscoting, SW Shoji White. I’m so happy with the way the color brightens the space.

I gathered some inspiration images of the look I wanted to achieve and developed a mood board with some of my favorite linens + accents from ISABELLA

THE FINAL RESULT

I finished the look by using white bedding with lots of different textures; like waffle , linen, and cotton I added a neutral rug with a fun print and some of my favorite books and accessories from the shop!

I am so proud of this project! Each time I walk into our room I feel like I am in such a warm, comfortable, beautiful space. It is also a reminder that even through difficult times such as these, we can always try to make the most of every single day!
